Assignment 1
Where is your school located?
Red Lake Elementary, 4th grade
Describe the culture of the community.
The culture of the community is Anishinabe or Ojibwe Native Americans.
What characteristics of the community might influence your teaching?
I think that the culture overall will influence my teaching. Learning how to teach with emphathy and compassion while maintaining a teacher presence. From what I have seen already, these kids need a steady presence in their life and someone who listen and care for them day to day.
Describe your classroom(s) / students (ethnic, number of students, male-female, exceptionalities), classroom facilities / resources.
There are 15 students in my classroom. There are 8 boys: Jamie, Aaron, Deven, Trevor, Tyrell, Jalen, Harlan and Michael. There are 7 girls: Aiyana, Mia, LeShaun, Diamond, Kalyssa, Trinity and Salena.
The resources that I have in terms of technology is limited. I have an elmo and an overhead. We have tables instead of desks. There are 4 to a table and they are two boys and two girls to a table. We have two take-a-break desks. This is part of their discipline model. If we feel that the student is being disruptive in a way that taking a break would correct this, they go to the take-a break chair. If the behavior continues, the student will then have a discipline sheet started that will be dated for one week. My cooperating teacher has a plethora of materials that I have so far included in a lot of my lessons.
Develop a list of goals for your student teaching experience. You will refer to this list in the middle and then end of your experience and describe your progress and or modifications to your original goal list.
Goals:
- Learn classroom management
- Organization of the classroom
- Differentiated learning.
- Learn as much as possible from my cooperating teacher
- Gain the trust of the students.
At this point, my primary concerns are……….
- Will my cooperating teacher and I be a good fit for each other?
- Will I understand the culutre enough to reach students?
- Will I appear confident enough in front of the students?
At this point , I am looking forward to most……….
- Making a connection with my students
- Learning day to day life really is for teachers
